Geo-Targeting Your Cookie Banner: When You Need It and How It Works

4 min read

Most websites only ever need one consent banner, but if your business sells across borders, that can change quickly.

Geo-targeting lets you show different cookie banners to different visitors, so everyone sees the right privacy message for their region.

How Geo-Targeting Works

Each CookieChest banner can be linked to one or more regions (UK, EU, US, etc.).

When a visitor lands on your site, our system detects their location and automatically shows the matching banner.

If you sell internationally, you might need a second or even third banner.

Each additional banner costs £8 per month, while the first is £12 per month — simple, transparent pricing.

When You Need Geo-Targeting

Below are three common scenarios that help you decide whether to keep one banner or add another.

Occasional EU Visitors Actively Targeting the EU Selling to the US
Scenario: You're UK-based, and only a few EU customers find you naturally; maybe one or two sales a year. Scenario: You run ads, social posts, or pricing in euros to attract EU buyers. Scenario: You're UK-based but ship or advertise to the US.
Banner setup: Stick with your UK GDPR banner. Banner setup: Add a dedicated EU GDPR banner (£8 per month). Banner setup: Your UK banner is legally fine, but consider adding a CCPA-style banner for American visitors.
Why: You're not actively targeting EU users, so the EU GDPR doesn't technically apply. The UK banner already follows almost identical rules, so you're safely covered without extra cost. Why: Once you intentionally market to EU residents, EU GDPR applies in full, even if your business is based in the UK. An EU-specific banner handles region detection, language, and EU-specific compliance references automatically.* Why: US privacy laws like CCPA and CPRA focus on "opt-out" rights, not prior consent. A lighter, localised banner feels more natural to US visitors and often improves engagement and tracking accuracy compared to a stricter UK-style prompt.

*Future-proof bonus: Keeping separate UK and EU banners also de-risks future divergence. UK and EU privacy laws are still closely aligned today but expected to drift apart over time. Having both in place now means you won't need a rushed rebuild later.

Why It Matters

Geo-targeting isn't just about ticking boxes — it's about trust and data quality.

Visitors who see a banner written for their region are more likely to engage honestly with it. That means cleaner consent data, better analytics, and a smaller risk of fines or mistrust.
